Conference and Exhibition on
DESALINATION FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
CLEAN WATER AND ENERGY
April 2326, 2012
Barcelona, Spain
CALL FOR PAPERS
Objectives
Water and energy are the issues of this millenium. This conference on desalination
for the environment will be devoted to advances towards providing fresh water for
all, at affordable cost and at economical energy requirements. With limited and
depleting natural sources, desalination can supplement some of the critically lacking
amounts of water needed for sustainable development. Its place in the water cycle
will be discussed.

The conference will overview the most recent developments in desalination technology,
its cost and extent of application, including socio-economic and environmental issues.
It will bring together research scientists, decision makers, managers, design engineers
and operators from water companies, industries, government departments, consulting
firms, research institutes and universities.
The place of industry, research and government decision making in this booming market
will be addressed.
Why and how should desalination be integrated into the national or regional water
management plans, ensuring socio-economic and environmental benefits, will be the
focal point of the conference.

Location
Barcelona is the capital, most populous city of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia
and the second largest city in Spain. It is the eleventh-most populous municipality
in the European Union and sixth-most populous urban area. Barcelona is Europes
largest city on the Mediterranean coast.
It is located on the Mediterranean coast between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat
and Besòs and is bounded to the west by the Serra de Collserola ridge.
Barcelona is recognised as a global city because of its importance
in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts and international
trade. Barcelona is a major economic centre with one of Europes
principal Mediterranean ports, and Barcelona International
Airport is the second largest in Spain after the Madrid-Barajas
Airport. Founded as a Roman city, Barcelona became the capital
of the Counts of Barcelona. After merging with the Kingdom
of Aragon, it became one of the most important cities of the
Crown of Aragon.

Besieged several times during
its history, Barcelona is today an important cultural centre
and a major tourist destination and has a rich cultural heritage.
Particularly renowned are architectural works of Antoni Gaudí
and Lluís Domènech i Montaner that have been
designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The headquarters of
the Union for the Mediterranean are located in Barcelona.
The € 230 million El Prat de Llobregat desalination,
which will supply Barcelona with 200,000 m³/d of potable
water, was officially opened on 22 July 2009.
The seawater reverse osmosis plant, constructed by Degremont
in joint venture with DRACE Medioambiente, will ease the threat
of water restrictions in the Spanish city by producing 24%
of the water consumed by the 4.5 million population.
