EuroMed 2010
Desalination for Clean Water and Energy
Cooperation among Mediterranean Countries
3-7 October 2010, Tel Aviv, Israel

Announcement

This is the sixth conference in the EuroMed series and the ninth in the Mediterranean region which provides an excellent forum for professionals, scientists and technologists in all aspects of water desali-nation, to meet and to exchange their ideas and experiences, and to update their knowledge of latest developments in the various aspects of water desalination (previous conferences held in Jerba, Tuni-sia; Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt; Marrakech, Morocco; Montpellier, France, Dead Sea, Jordan; Limassol, Cyprus; Malta; Santa Margherita, Italy; Halkidiki, Greece; Baden-Baden, Germany). The key elements underlying the policies and strategies governing the optimum use of the various desalination technolo-gies in the region to provide water, an essential ingredient for peace in the region will be discussed.

. Around the Mediterranean there is a growing awareness of increasing de-mand for water while the natural sup-ply is increasingly limited. The situation of the southern countries is dramati-cally more serious with rapidly increas-ing populations and much lower rain-fall. Different techniques can be used to supplement natural water. Desalina-tion technologies can make potable the brackish and sea water which are avail-able in these regions

Cooperation between countries of Eu-rope and the southern rim of the Medi-countries is essential. Attention will be focused on the possibility of producing water by desalination for the region in a sustainable manner and at a cost that people can afford.

The conference will overview the most recent developments in desalination technology, its cost and extent of application including socio-economic and environmental issues.

TOPICS

–Water demand in countries of the MENA region
–Water demand and supply: Israel, Jordan, Palestine
–Desalination and the environment
–Desalination and water purification processe
–Seawater thermal and membrane processes
–Brackish water desalination
–Wastewater treatment
–Desalination and water resource management
–Energy recovery technology
–Renewable energy for desalination
–Solar, wind, wave, osmotic power
–Pre-treatment and post-treatment
–Post-treatment of desalinated water
–Brine disposal and removal of specific compound
–Fouling and scaling and material selection
–Financing
– public and private

Selected papers will be published in Desalination and Water Treatment journal.

LOCATION

In Israel desalination technology has been developed since the 1960s. Today the largest plants provide water from Ashkelon, Palmachim and Hadera, and more are to dot the Mediterranean coastline, while a Jordan–Israel project to bring water from the Red to the Dead Sea is being studied.

Tel Aviv with a population of 391,300 is the largest city in the metropolitan area of Gush Dan, home to 3.15 million people as of 2008.

Founded in 1909, Tel Aviv is a major economic hub, home to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange and many corporate officesand research and development centers. Its beaches, bars, cafés, restaurants, upscale shopping, great weather and cosmopolitan lifestyle have led to it being a popular tourist destination for domestic and overseas visitors alike and given way to its reputation as a “Mediterranean metropolis that never sleeps”. It is the country’s financialcapital and a major performing arts and business center. Tel Aviv’s urban area is the Middle East’s second biggest city economy.
