- Fouling
of Membrane and Thermal Units
A Unified Approach to Its
Principles, Assessment, Control, and Mitigation
Roya Sheikholeslami
2007
Desalination Publications
www.desline.com
ISBN 0-86689-066-1
This scholarly monograph authored by a leading fouling
researcher reflects the immense advances in basic and
applied aspects of fouling that have taken place over
the last 40 years. Traditionally, engineers and scientists
have been encouraged to develop their expertise in a specific
area; hence very limited may have the experience of dealing
with the same principles in completely different systems.
As such indeed a very limited people have experience with
fouling of differing process equipment such as membranes
and heat exchangers. This fact often leads to exhaustive
and unnecessary efforts as they attempt to reinvent the
wheel. It is therefore more constructive for design, mitigation
and control to assess fouling in terms of its own principles
and irrespective of the process unit in which it occurs.
This book aims to combine and consolidate the principles
upon which the fouling phenomenon is based instead of
the processes in which it occurs and to high-light the
similarities and differences that may exist in fouling
of different types of process equipment including both
membrane and thermal units and from both the fundamental
and practical aspects. This monumental effort has been
admirably tackled by the author. This book will no doubt
help individuals to better under-stand, address, and mitigate
the fouling problem and to accelerate progress in fouling
research and development efforts.

http://www.researchandmarkets.com/product/d1bc74/fundamentals_of_biological_wastewater
This concise introduction to the fundamentals of biological
treatment of wastewater
describes how to model and integrate biological steps
into industrial processes.
The book first covers the chemical, physical and biological
basics, including wastewater
characteristics, microbial metabolism, determining stoichiometric
equations for catabolism
and anabolism, measurements of mass transfer and respiration
rates and the aerobic
treatment of wastewater loaded with dissolved organics.
It the moves on to deal with
such applications and technologies as nitrogen and phosphorus
removal, membrane technology,
the assessment and selection of aeration systems, simple
models for biofilm reactors and
the modeling of activated sludge processes. A final section
looks at the processing of
water and the treatment of wastewater integrated into
the production process.
- Hybrid
Membrane Systems for Water Purification
Technology, Systems, Design and Operation
Rajindar Singh
ISBN: 1-85617-442-5
384 pages
2005
Elsevier
USD 195, GBP 120, EUR 175
The purification of water can be carried out for several
reasons:
to provide potable water; ultra-pure water for certain
industries;
the desalination of brackish or salt water; thepurification
for food
applications or industrial uses such as fuel cell power
plants.
Membranes are becoming more frequently used in these processes
of
purification, and this book presents a current synthesis
of their technology
followed by guidelines on the design and operation of
membrane plant systems.
Real life case studies enhance the detailed text, giving
an insight into problems
encountered and solutions devised. Comprehensive engineering
data and notes
are added to enhance the practical nature of this book,
which will be of interest
and importance to chemical process engineers, OEM sales
and application engineers,
engineers and consultants in the water industries and
environmental engineers.

Desalination
Impacts of Brine and Chemical Discharge on the Marine
Environment
Sabine Lattemann and Thomas Hoepner
2004
Desalination Publications, www.desline.com
and DEStech Publications, www.destechpub.com
$59
Population growth, ongoing industrialization, land irrigation
and higher living standards increase the demand for drinking
water. Ground waters are already excessively exploited
and at risk of salt water intrusion in coastal areas,
while surface waters are scarce or polluted. As good quality
raw water becomes less available, water must be purified
and augmented by seawater desalination. An introduction
to the two main desalting processes is given in this book
with an emphasis on vulnerable points in process design
and choice of materials. To protect reverse osmosis and
multi-stage flash plants from certain types of seawater
constituents, chemical pretreatment is required, while
cleaning chemicals are used to restore the plants efficiency.
Both procedures are described with regard to the type
of foulant. Classification into different groups of chemicals
is made, and single chemicals and underlying mechanisms
that make them effective additives are described. This
book appeals for environmental assessments of new desalination
plants and it is the first which provides data about the
chemical discharges into the sea and their marine ecological
effects. Special attention is given to the Arabian Gulf
where 50% of the worldwide seawater plants operate. This
approach takes the Gulf's high installed capacity into
account and relates it to the surrounding Gulf ecosystem.
Maps of the region are included and an outlook for the
future is presented.
- Nanofiltration
Principles and Applications
A.I. Schaefer, A.G. Fane, and T.D. Waite
2004
Nanofiltration
processes are finding wide applications in several 'wet'
industries, such as water/wastewater treatment, water
re-use,
textile industry, diary industry, food industry and the
pulp and paper
industries. Despite this, no definitive book exists which
covers
the principles of the techniques and their potential and
actual applications.
' Nanofiltration: Principles and Applications ' is edited
by three well-known
specialists from Australia, and contains chapters from
top international authorities.
The result is a comprehensive and up to date account which
will be essential
reading for membrane designers, manufacturers and end-users
worldwide.
